Kailua-Kona, affectionately called just Kona by the locals, is the main city on the west side of Hawaii's Big Island, nestled under the Hualalai Volcano. It's best known for great coffee and big fish - both of which are found in abundance along this stretch of black, lava-covered coastline. With around 300 days of sunshine, the sun is sure to shine on your visit.

Kailua-Kona is a tender port, so Hawaii cruises generally use local boats as tenders. The tender wharf is in the heart of downtown Kailua and you can walk everywhere from the wharf.

Sights to See

The Sadie Seymour Botanical Garden lets you experience the island's flora up close. A variety of aquatic activities are available including kayaking, rafting, and snorkelling. Also of interest is the legacy of Kona's historical past where you can visit the summer palace of Hawaiian Royalty, the first Christian church in the state and the birthplace of King Kamehameha III.

What's for Lunch

Try the shave ice. We love the smooth, creamy texture and with so many flavours it won't take you long until you find your fav.

If you see only one thing...

Visit the site where Captain Cook was killed, 19km south of Kona at Kealakekua Bay. A white obelisk marks the point.

Local speak

Make sure you have plenty of time to ku'u aku as part of your visit to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands.

Memento

Because of the rich volcanic soil, the coffee grown around Kona produces a taste that has an international reputation. Buy a bag of beans to savour back home.
