Boston Marathon Explosions - Tues 16 April 2013 There were two explosions at the Boston Marathon earlier this morning New Zealand time. As a result, security at airports across the US has been tightened and there may be delays at some airports. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT for passengers travelling on Virgin Australia, Pacific Blue and NZ7000 flight series on 12 and 13 January 2013
If you are scheduled to travel with Virgin this weekend we want to provide you with some important information to assist you with your flight(s).
Virgin is upgrading its computer system and between 4am on Saturday 12 January and approximately 5pm on Sunday 13 January (AEDST), most of the airline’s booking and administrative systems will be offline.

The enormous earthquake and subsequent tsunami that occurred in Japan on Friday has devastated large regions of the country. The official death toll stands at around 1,500 but many, many people are missing.
International flights in and out of Kansai (Osaka) as well as the Tokyo airports (Haneda and Narita) are operating as normal. Normal flight services have resumed to, from and between most Japanese cities, excluding Sendai and the worst affected areas.

Narita Airport (60km east of Tokyo) is closed at the moment although damage is not reported
Haneda Airport (15km south of Tokyo) is also closed but again, it is unknown how damaged
Nagoya Airport is closed but damage is unknown
Sendai Airport is largely destroyed and flooded
Kansai Airport (Osaka) is open but it is unlikely that services will be operating as normal
Fukuoka Airport is also open but it is unlikely that services will be operating as normal
Chitose Airport (Sapporo) is currently closed and it is unknown if it is damaged
Widespread disruptions to services within Japan and internationally, can be expected
Train services in affected areas are suspended or operating sporadically. The Shinkansen (bullet train) has ceased operating for the time being.

Flight Centre has pledged $1 million through the Red Cross to help those affected by the Christchurch earthquake. The company, which opened its first New Zealand store in 1987 in Christchurch, will also create an internal fund to support its own people in the city and were determined to contribute proactively to the relief efforts.
The Company’s Personal and Corporate travel business have pulled additional resources in around the country to ensure there is still 24-7 assistance for the business community.
