Best time to go

Any time. Macau enjoys a sub-tropical climate. The typhoon (wet) season lasts from June to September, with an average temperature of 30°C. From October to December temperatures average 20°C, while January to March is cooler, with an average of 15°C, but with sunny days.

Macau attractions

Walk cobble-stoned streets, explore 400-year-old Mediterranean churches and contemplate life in ancient Chinese temples. Discover old Portuguese baroque architecture in the streets along Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and explore colourful Portuguese-style buildings around Lilau Square in the old ‘Christian quarter’ where the Portuguese first settled in Macau.

Fortaleza de Guia – Take a leisurely hour-long hike up to the fascinating Guia Fortress for unbeatable panoramic views of the Macau peninsula, perhaps returning by cable car.

Coloane Island – Explore the narrow, crumbling shop-lined lanes of Coloane Village, the haunt of pirates until as recently as 1910. Hike inland or swim off Hac Sa beach.

Rua de São Paulo – Admire the magnificent stone facade – intricately carved by Japanese monks – and the majestic stairway of stone steps, now all that remains of the Jesuit church built between 1582 and 1602.

A-Ma Temple – Explore Macau’s oldest Chinese temple complex, built in the 15th century. Located halfway up the western slope of Barra Hill, the complex sits in perfect harmony with its natural environment.

Macau Fisherman’s Wharf – Wander around Macau’s first theme park of more than 150 shops and restaurants built in the style of different world seaports such as Cape Town, Amsterdam and Venice. Enjoy rides, daily jet-ski stunt shows and nightly explosions from the complex’s 40m high volcano.

Did you know?

Once famous as a base for counterfeiters, spies and drug runners, the ex-Portuguese colony of Macau is the only region within China where gambling is legal. And since being handed back to China in 1999, Macau has become the world’s number one gambling operation, surpassing Las Vegas in 2007. Macau currently has around 30 casinos, though this is expected to double by 2009.
