Albany, on Australia’s southwestern point in the Great Australian Bight, is a classic Australian coastal town. An old convict settlement and whaling station, Albany is Western Australia’s oldest settlement. About a 4 and a half hour drive southeast of Perth, it has stunning white beaches and spectacular national parks.

Albany offers a range of natural wonders in the area. Take a trip to nearby Torndirrup National Park, about a 15 minute drive from the centre of town, for a look at The Gap, The Natural Bridge and various blow holes along the coastline. Follow Frenchman Bay Road around to the point for a swim at Goode Beach and a spectacular view of the islands in King George Sound. There are also eco-walks available throughout the area that range from 20 minutes to about 4 hours and suit all skill levels of bush walkers.
Back in town, take a look around the old whaling station at Whale World and the replica of the Brig Amity, the ship that first bought convicts to Albany’s shores. The Old Convict Gaol is perfect if your interested in the history of Albany. You might even try one of the spooky night time tours.
Albany also has some impressive beaches in and around King George Sound. The main city beach Middleton, is never very busy and has plenty of room to relax and enjoy the warm and stable Mediterranean climate the region is famous for. King George Sound is also a magnificent place for whale watching with numbers of Southern Right whales and Humpback whales steadily increasing. Whale watching cruises are offered throughout the year and are definitely worth the trip.
Albany’s main shopping strip is York street and there are a number of notable restaurants around the area. There are heaps of hotels and lots of bed and breakfasts along the coast if you fancy being a bit out of town. The best way to get to Albany is the scenic drive from Perth however, flights are also available.
