Canberra is Australia's young and energetic capital city. It was purpose built to be the capital and as such is a planned city, centred around the central Lake Burley Griffin. Unlike many other capitals around the country, Canberra has smooth running traffic, large open areas as well as a relaxed and modern atmosphere.
Among the leafy surrounds and open parklands, Canberra has dozens of Australia’s best cultural attractions, museums and galleries offering which tell the stories of Australia and it's people, politics, sports and history.
The National Museum of Australia has expansive exhibitions all about Australian culture, past and present. Fascinating insites into Australia's aboriginal culture will educate Australians and internation visitors alike. There is a rotating theatre and dozens of displays highlighting aspects of historical events as well as contempory Australia.
One of Australia's most impressive buildings is Parliament House, where Australia’s Federal Government makes it's political decisions. From the Parliament rooftop areas you can take in panoramic views of the surrounding city and there are also renowned collection of Australian contemporary art held here. Be sure to visit and reflect on past tragedies and triumphs at the excellent Australian War Memorial, which commemorates the commitment and camaraderie of Australians in war. The Memorial holds a large collection of military artefacts and has some world class audio-visual exhibitions depicting some of the nations most important campaigns.

The ACT is a great place to spend some time in the great Australian outdoors. Canberra has scores of parks, walkways and bike tracks that wind around Lake Burley Griffin to the city's various key attractions.
The National Science and Technology Centre - Questacon is also in Canberra. Visitors can get involved in some hands on activities - experience the sensation of an earthquake or test your mettle in a free-fall. Visit the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to take a look at the training ground for Australia's best athletes or test your own fitness and abilities at the Sportex exhibition.
After a day of exploring world-class exhibits and enjoying some fresh air there are plenty of options for some great dining or a night on the town. There are dozens of bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from around Canberra or you can get out of town to a winery or explore the options in some of the smaller townships around the ACT.
Canberra and the ACT are a good base from which to explore the region, there are some great day trips not far from Canberra. The Snowy Mountains are close by for winter skiing or hiking and exploration, or even trout fishing when the weather warms up. Some excellent southern New South Wales coastal towns are also an easy drive.
