Even before that first taste of full-bodied red wine is swallowed down a thirsty throat, you’ll be drunk on the Barossa Valley. Australia’s favourite wine-region is an artist’s paradise, where every inch of tumbling, green vineyard, clear blue sky and rich red gum-trees could be a landscaped masterpiece. Only an hour out of Adelaide this escape will have you tipsy from wine tastings and merry on life.

From Adelaide drive up the Northern Expressway or you might choose to take the scenic route along the Adelaide Hills. Bus tours are also plentiful and relatively cheap - you could take a day trip to wine country or decide to stay in the quaint hotels and enjoy the culinary delights for the week. There are four major towns in the Valley: Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Lyndoch and Angaston, so you’ll never be stumped for choices.
Of course a trip to the Barossa would not be complete without visiting a vineyard and winery - Peter Lehmann Wines in Tanunda is your first stop. Enjoy an affordable Barossa shiraz or splurge on a riesling, then head to Menglers Hill Lookout for spectacular view of the entire valley.
Don’t be surprised if you find a lot of German inspired cuisine. The area was originally founded by German settlers and their legacy still exists in the Bratwurst and cream buns that are often on the menu. You’ll find that most of the restaurants use fresh ingredients from the area, for the ultimate home-cooking experience.
Take the time to visit Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, where it’s all locally inspired flavours with a seasonal bite. Cooking demonstrations are held every day at 2pm combined with a range of scrumptious goodies to purchase, you’ll find the perfect ingredients to accompany that fruity wine waiting for you.
Transport might be your only issue - bike hiring is available with police always on alert for possible drink drivers.
