Campbelltown is a picturesque town built in the 1830’s and 1840’s by convicts. There are 35 heritage listed buildings indicate the historic importance of the town. It was established as one of the garrison towns linking Hobart and Launceston in 1821and is situated 132 kms north of Hobart on the Midland Highway. Governor Macquarie named it after his wife Elizabeth Campbell – and the town is located on the Elizabeth River.

The three arched bridge welcomes you as you approach from Hobart, next is the Foxhunters Return – originally a coaching station. There are many substantial and beautiful buildings to see in the town, including churches, manor houses and pubs.
It is the centre of wool production in Tasmania, based on the merino Saxon sheep. The first wool show was held in 1939, which it is believed, makes it the oldest continuing agricultural show in the British Commonwealth.
