Cape Le Grand National Park Information

The Esperance Region (Sand Plains) is an area of 31,390 hectares. The region is 48 kilometres to the park boundary from Esperance and 800 kilometres from Perth.

Access to the National Park is via good bitumen roads to Lucky Bay and Cape Le Grand Beach. Gravel roads from there on. There is no bus service, however regular tours operate from Esperance.

Undulating sand plains, rich in coastal heath lay around massive granite and gneiss outcrops (Mount Le Grand the highest at three hundred and fifty three metres). Dispersed throughout are small freshwater pools and swamps. The coastal scenery is most spectacular with rock outcrops, magnificent white sand, blue water and many islands.

There is a great variety of vegetation from coastal heath to eucalypt and banksia groves. The most common fauna is the Western Grey Kangaroo, which is almost tame at Lucky Bay. There are numerous small mammals, including the Pigmy Honey Possum and Bandicoot. Many reptiles can be seen and a large variety of birds.

Camping is allowed at Lucky Bay and Cape Le Grand Beach. There is water at both sites, toilets, barbecues, tables, and solar hot water showers. Camping fees apply.

There are five picnic sites all with tables.

A marked walk trail traverses the rugged coast and beaches from Cape Le Grand to Rossiter Bay, fifteen kilometres in length. This trail has been dissected into four sections, allowing easy one-hour walks or more difficult eight hour walks.

Swimming is possible at most beaches. Rock-climbing is permitted at Frenchman Peak (two hundred and eighty six metres) and Mount Le Grand. The best time to visit for wildflowers is from September to November.
