Carcoar is an historic town situated 50kms south west of Bathurst and 250 kms west of Sydney. It is the 3rd oldest settlement west of the Blue Mountains and during the mid 1800's was the second most important settlement in the area after Bathurst. It has an unusual number of very well preserved buildings constructed between 1860 and 1890. This investment proved ill advised as its importance in the region was already dwindling from the 1880's due to the discovery of gold further west and the late arrival of the railway.

Coombing Park was the original land grant in the area and Carcoar was established to service the estate. The first allotments were sold in 1840. It grew rapidly and became a major commercial centre, attracting a number of bushrangers and lapsed convicts. This all adds to its fascinating history. 19th century buildings include the Court House, several churches, several hotels, general stores, a convent, the school, the school of arts, post office and the railway station.
