Built on a honeycomb of mines, Bendigo in central Victoria is lined with impressive nineteenth-century 'boom town' architecture. Visitors can pull on a hard hat and head below the city for a fascinating tour of the mine. If you're game, you can take a ride on CageRider, a miner's cage that plunges 30 storeys underground before shooting up for a bird's eye view of the city. Above ground, there's a self-guided surface tour, an interactive museum and vintage trams that travel Bendigo's streets and provide a recorded commentary of the city's history and architecture.
