The town was established by Edward Burton Gleeson in 1842. Gleeson named the location after his ancestral home of County Clare in Ireland. In 1919 a railway was built between Riverton and Clare and lasted until 1974. The tracks of the railway were removed in 1980 after damage caused by the infamous Ash Wednesday Fires.
