INDEX OF ALL states AND LOCATIONSWeather & Climate
Due to Australia’s vast size a variety of climates are experienced throughout the country. Typically the north of Australia is tropical and hot with the south tending to be more temperate and sub-tropical. Most of the centre of the country is arid and semi-arid and most of Australia’s rainfall occurs around the coast. Daytime maximum temperatures in far north of Australia usually do not drop below 30°C even in winter as opposed to temperatures in southern regions of the country which often drop below freezing in winter. The Snowy Mountains in the South East often enjoys metres of winter snow and some parts of Tasmania experiences similar temperatures to England.
Australia’s winter months are from June-August and summer months range from December-February. In the tropics the dry season occurs in the winter and the wet season is in the summer while in the southern part of the country the seasonal temperature variation is greater. Rainfall generally falls throughout the year in Sydney and Melbourne however in Adelaide and Perth summers tend to be dry with most of the rainfall occuring during winter.
Australia is wonderful to visit any time of the year. When it is too cold in the south, head to the warm north, or when it is too hot in the north simply head south. To avoid crowds and high season prices visit the country outside school holiday times especially around December-February. Recommended clothing for travel to Australia are lightweights for the warmer months and warmer clothing for winters. Depending on the season and region being visited waterproofs are also advised.
