Derwent Valley Information

There is much more to this valley than meets the eye. .. not only is it the perfect escape to nature, but the Valley also offers the chance to step back in time.

Historians will love this region, as tales filter down from the arrival of Irish rebels who were sent over as convicts. Settlement first took place along the banks of the Derwent as early as 1810, in the heart of the Valley at New Norfolk. Today, the local community reaps the benefits of those hardworking settlers, with a great range of country lifestyle attractions on offer.

Travel from Hobart by river through the Derwent Valley to its source at beautiful Lake St Clair, and you will be treated to picturesque scenery including the precipitous cliffs on both sides at the approach to New Norfolk. The area surrounding New Norfolk is filled with walks and climbs tucked into the hills and riverbanks. Myrtle, Collins Cap and Russell falls are all well worth a visit.

Treat yourself to a thrilling jet-boat ride up the Derwent River rapids, go fishing for wild trout, experience farm life on the award-winning Curringa merino farm, at Oast House discover how oats were processed, take a distillery tour in the Central Highlands or a ride on the Derwent Valley Tourist Railway. Finally, enjoy a cleansing ale at Australia's oldest licensed hotel, the Bush Inn, then pray for forgiveness at the nation's oldest church, St Matthews, both in New Norfolk.
