Captain’s log, HMS Endeavour, 18th May, 1770
“ …I have named it Double Island Point, on account of its figure (Lat 25 58'S, Long 206 48'W). The land within this point is of a moderate and pretty equal height, but the point itself is of such an unequal height that it looks like 2 small islands laying under the land; it likewise may be known by the white cliffs on the N. side of it.”
So wrote Captain James Cook on his famous voyage of discovery to the east coast of Australia and beyond. Then, as now, the point is a magnet for marine life of every description. Dolphins and whales (the latter from July to November) are a common sight here and Wolf Rock, a formation of 4 volcanic pinnacles a short distance from the point is rated as one of Australia’s top 10 dive spots.

As a dive location, there are plenty of swim throughs, vertical gutters and overhanging ledges to explore. Plunging to s depth of 40 metres, it is excellent for multi level scuba diving. Fish life is prolific and you’re likely to see lots of trevally, cod, coral trout, perch, mackerel, batfish, leopard sharks, wobbegong and the famous resident Grey Nurse sharks. It is home to several giant Queensland groper, and manta ray are frequent visitors.
The surf at Double Island Point is a right hand point break with a length of 50 to 150 metres and on a good day can be 300 to 500 metres.
Access is by 4WD along the beach heading south from Rainbow Beach or heading north from Noosa North Shore. There is also an overland track (4WD only) from Rainbow Beach which brings you out on the beach quite close to the point.
