The name given to the range by the indigenous people of the area is Woodna Wolpena, meaning Great Mountain. The name Elder Range was given by Fredrick Sinnet who surveyed the area in 1851. The name came from one Alexander Elder who conducted business on the same street where Sinnet and his partner resided.
