Exeter owes its existence to the coming of the railway in the 1860's and has a classic example of a historic timber railway station. It takes its name from the hometown of the area's first pioneer James Badgery, whose descendants owned most of the land surrounding the village. The village started to develop in 1889 because of the availability of rural subdivisions. Soon there was a store and a bakery, a public school and a School of Arts Building. However, no inn or hotel was built.
