Just three hours north of Adelaide are the spectacular Flinders Ranges, an area of arresting natural beauty, ancient mountains and quaint towns. The enormous Wilpena Pound is the centerpiece of the Flinders Ranges National Park-a natural amphitheatre containing prolific flora and fauna and threaded with excellent walking trails. The frontier town of Coober Pedy produces most of the world's opals: try your luck at noodling (fossicking) while you're there. Half the population lives underground to escape the summer heat; you can also find an underground church and hotels, and a golf course with no grass!
Mount Remarkable National Park, lying across the Southern Flinders Ranges, offers a diverse array of plants and animals. And with its dramatic scenery, it's a great destination for bushwalkers and nature lovers.

In the southern Flinders Ranges, charming villages support a thriving farming community and a rich mix of bed and breakfast places and farmstays. You can even spend the night in the old Gladstone Gaol. Highlights include rodeos, Aboriginal carvings, historic hotels and diverse arts and crafts. In the ranges see deep red gorges, native plants, wildlife and gum-lined creeks.
To see excellent Aboriginal rock paintings, created by the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Ranges, visit the Yourambulla Caves, a few kilometres south of Hawker. You will also see wonderful panoramic views of the ranges.
Explorers Way - from Adelaide to Darwin is one of Australia’s great driving adventures. The Stuart Highway truly is Explorer's Way: tracing the route of 19th century explorer John McDouall Stuart, who in 1862 became the first person to traverse the continent from south to north. These days the entire 3,245-kilometre road is sealed – making it perfect for exploring places like the opal mining town of Coober Pedy, Woomera rocket range, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Alice Springs.
