Australia has a wonderful variety of great quality food and many options of places to eat. Restaurants, clubs, pubs, cafes, take-away stores and food courts all offer an array of food to feed any hungry traveller. Foods native to Australia include Kangaroo, crocodile, emu and bush tucker such as berries, nuts, roots, and ants. Other well known Australian favorites include Vegemite, the Tim-Tam biscuit, the lamington cake, the pavlova desert, ANZAC biscuits, damper bread and the chiko roll (a deep fried snack).
Cuisines widely available throughout the country include Chinese, Italian, Thai, Greek, Japanese, Indian, Lebanese, Vietnamese and Mexican. Many major cities and towns also host ‘farmers markets’ with an abundant supply of fresh fruit and vegetables. They are cheap and incredibly fresh.
Australians love to partake in a drink or two. Drinking beer seems to be part of the Australian culture. Popular brews include VB, XXXX, Coopers and Boags as well as many other local and international brands. Australia produces top quality wine from the Barossa Valley, Hunter Valley, Victoria, Mudgee and Margaret River which are readily available throughout the country. There are also all varieties of spirits available including the popular and locally produced Bundaberg Rum.
Australia’s legal drinking age is 18 years.
