Any description of Fraser Island will simply not do its natural beauty justice. This oasis to the south of the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest sand island, stretching 75 miles (120 kms) just off the coast of Queensland near Hervey Bay. It is a wonderland of mighty sand dunes stretching over 700 ft (240m) into the air, ancient rainforests with incredible flora and fauna and over 100 fresh water lakes teeming with turtles and water birds.

Hervey Bay is the gateway to Fraser Island and considered the best place in the world to see Humpback whales. Stopping over on their migration from the freezing waters of the Antarctic to the warmer equatorial waters, the best time to see them is August through to mid November. Hit the island by ferry, barge or air and go snorkelling or diving off the island’s sheltered west coast where dugongs, dolphins and sharks are found in abundance.
Spend a lazy morning swimming at Lake Birrabean or Lake Wabby. Both are less crowded than Lake Mackenzie, the most popular lake, but are just are magnificent. Walk through some of the island’s 55 miles (90 kms) of tracks or go north and watch as the wind blows away the sand dunes to unveil the ancient rainforests.
Pick up a diving tour and dive down to explore some of the 15 ships wrecked on the reefs or travel up 75 Mile Beach, the world’s only beach highway and runway, to check out the wrecked Mahoe. You can set up a camp on the beach and watch as the sun sets spectacularly behind the dunes. Don’t forget to swing by Eli Creek, the island’s largest freshwater creek and the Champagne Pools between Indian Head and Waddy Point, famous for the sea foam that washes over the rocks.
Fraser Island is 4WD only, so you need to hire one for your stay, take your own or join one of the tours offered on the Island.
