Travelling to the Great Ocean Road
There's more to Victoria than mesmerising Melbourne
The Great Ocean Road is iconically Australian, with prime surf breaks, charming seaside villages, lush national parks and the rugged splendour of the 12 Apostles. Kick off your journey in Melbourne, some 95 kilometres from the "official" start of the Great Ocean Road, by booking your cheap domestic flights on Qantas, Virgin Australia or Jetstar. Melbourne's second-fiddle airport, Avalon Airport near Geelong, will get you on your great ocean roadtrip quicker, but isn't as frequently serviced as Tullamarine Airport.
Break up the drive by taking a tour
Since 1932, the Great Ocean Road has lured visitors to the south-west coast of Victoria, boasting plenty of natural attractions and, today, a booming food and wine scene. There is so much to see and do, it can be hard to know where to start! Tackle the must-dos and stretch your legs by adding a tour to your getaway, whether you are looking to head out on the water, vineyard-hop the inland wineries or trek the native bushland with an expert leading the way.
Take the wheel on the wide, open road
It's about the journey, not just the destination, when exploring the Great Ocean Road. The best way to experience the beauty around every twist and turn is by car. If you don't have access to your own set of wheels or perhaps want to enjoy the journey in something a little cushier, it's easier than ever to add a hire car to your travel plans!
