Hanging Rock is a rare example of the natural formation of rock known as Mamelon. The landmark was created by an unusual volcanic release of a stiff lava through a small gap in the earth. Natural erosion of the rock has left it an amazing shape and it has become a major tourism destination. A race course was built next to the rock under the same name.

A natural reserve encapsulates the rock today. The landmark was made famous in 1900 by Joan Lindsay's book which told a haunting tale of a group of girls who go missing at the rock during an excursion. A film was later produced under the same title of 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'. Despite the scary stories, Hanging Rock is still a great place to picnic.
