Head of Bight Information

Please note, the viewing platform at Head of Bight is currently closed - it will re-open for the next whale season in June.

Head of Bight is on South Australia's remote far West Coast and famous for its land based viewing of the magnificent Southern Right Whales. Few other locations in Australia provide such a great viewing opportunity without impacting on the whales. Other species occasionally seen from the viewing platforms include Australian Sea lions and the Great White Shark. The location provides views of the Bunda cliffs to the west and giant sand dunes and long beaches to the east.

Whales are seen between June and October. Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica to these warmer waters during winter. Their primary purpose while here is to breed and mate. While visiting the Head of Bight you will see mothers, calves and males.
