Hervey Bay is renowned the world over for its whale watching opportunities. On their annual migration between the feeding grounds of Antarctica and the Great Barrier Reef, majestic humpback whales spend between three and five days in Hervey Bay, resting or feeding their newborn calves. Their arrival sparks off the annual Whale Festival in August, when the city comes alive with music, food and parades in celebration of the beauty of nature.
Hervey Bay is also the gateway to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, a stunning example of pristine Australian wilderness. The north-facing sheltered waters of Hervey Bay are protected by Fraser Island, offering a perfect swimming environment – a big plus for families. The area is also known for its superb fishing: try your luck from the beach, off the rocks and the pier, or head out on a deep-sea fi shing charter. The region is also great for active adventures such as horse riding and go-karting. Hervey Bay's foreshore offers 14 kilometres of shared pedestrian, wheelchair and bicycle pathways, as well as children's play areas, beach hire, public shower and toilet facilities and areas for picnics and barbecues.
