Kangaroo Island is an ecological masterpiece
Kangaroo Island is, quite simply, without a peer anywhere in the world. A holiday on the island means literally staying inside a wildlife sanctuary – with wallabies, echidnas, koalas, bandicoots, possums, platypus and, of course, kangaroos as constant companions. The scenery is equally diverse with hundreds of kilometres of majestic coastline providing an endless number of secluded bays, rockpools, trekking trails and prime sites for swimming, surfing, diving or fishing. In fact, Kangaroo Island’s Vivonne Bay was declared Australia’s best beach after extensive research by Sydney University.
Despite its stunning scenery Kangaroo Island has not escaped the food and wine fever that has taken hold of the rest of the state. It is South Australia’s newest wine region with 29 growers and a host of local gourmet produce showcased from cellar doors and farmers’ gates to fi rst class restaurants and cafes featuring the best fresh-caught seafood. Good roads and walking trails make Kangaroo Island easy to explore, either in the car or on foot, but with 540 kilometre of coastline, it does take some time to soak up all the sights. Art galleries, museums, specialty farms and wildlife parks compete for attention with beautiful beachside parks, tempting eateries and private pamper packages. It is an island holiday unlike any other and promises a truly unforgettable experience.
