Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) Information

The Olga's as they are best known, are called Kata Tjuka in the language of the traditional owners, meaning 'Many heads'. It's an apt description for this remarkable collection of rock formations which are just 30 kilometres or so from Uluru.

The area is a weird and wonderful cluster of 36 huge rock domes, thought to be up to 500 million years old. The largest of the domes is Mount Olga, which is more than half a kilometre high, 200 metres taller than Uluru itself.

Kata Tjuka has been inhabited the the Anangu people for around 20,000 years, and evidence of aboriginal life is evident in rock paintings and other artefacts from throughout the centuries. The tribes operate tours in the area, including a walk around the Valley of Winds, which takes about 4 or 5 hours. It is also possible to walk through the Olga gorge. Be aware that walks are sometimes restricted to the early mornings when temperatures are expected to be high.
