After Darwin and Alice Springs, Katherine is the NT's third largest 'city', but with a population of just 10,000, it is considered more like a big, friendly outback town.
The areas around Katherine is spoilt with natural attractions, man of which are contained in the Nitmiluk National Park an area of gorges and waterfalls on the Arnhem Plateau. Here the Katherine River has carved it's way through the ancient landscape, creating a series of gorges and swimming holes along it's path, including the magnificent Katherine Gorge.

Further south is the Mataranka thermal pool, an amazing series of hot springs set in beautiful tropical rainforest surrounds. Other natural attractions include the Cutta Cutta caves, Edith Falls an the Katherine Hot Springs.
