Local resident, Harold Bell, brought the caves at Kelly Hill to the attention of the general public. Harold Bell first explored the caves with a small group of companions in the summer of 1925 and 1926. Shortly afterwards he was appointed caretaker and the caves were opened to the public.
The Kelly Hill Visitor Centre houses interpretive displays, a small selection of souvenirs, limited range of drinks and snack food, attractive picnic ground with tables, seats and rain water, gas barbecues in two shelter sheds and a toilet block.
Grassdale is a significant reminder of the early pioneers on Kangaroo Island. European occupation at Grassdale dates back to 1812 when Captain George Sutherland reported sealers living in bark huts near the site of the present farm cottage.
