Magnetic Island has a thriving residential and tourist population that provide plenty of options for travellers. Make your way across to Horseshoe Bay, the water sports centre of the island, and get involved in jet skiing to secluded beaches or just cruising around on the crystal blue waters. Wander round to the eastern side of the island and walk straight off the beach and into amazing shallow water reefs at Alma, Arthur and Florence beaches.

If you’re looking for a more immersive diving experience, then Magnetic Island has a range of options to suit all divers. Beginners can take their first dives into the great blue and experts can take new challenges in one of the top shipwreck sites in the world, The Yongala. Deep sea fishing charters are also run out of Horseshoe Bay and can take you to local fishing spots for the best local catch.

The majority of the island is taken up by the Magnetic Island National park. Its has 15 miles (25 kms) of walking tracks and you’re bound to stumble upon one of the amazing beaches on the north side of the island. A fun way to see the island is to hire a Mini Moke from Nelly Bay and explore the island at your own pace. Standard cars and motor scooters are also available.

There are extensive luxury accommodation options such as Peppers Blue on Blue Nelly and the Grand Mecure Apartments both in Nelly Bay. There is no camping on the island, however budget options are scattered throughout. There are regular flights to Townsville from Brisbane and some other cities.  Think carefully before driving there as it’s a long way.  But once in and around Townsville enjoy the sunshine - Townsville allegedly has more days of sunshine than anywhere else in Queensland.
