This land was originally inhabited by the Dja Dja Wurrung people. The Macedon Ranges acted as the border between them and the Wurrundjeri Aboriginal community. White settlers came to the area in 1837 when Alexander Mollison camped by the Coliben River. He was quite impressed and got together 49 workers and many animals and started the community which is now Malmsbury.

The land proved perfect for agriculture and by the mid 1800's was a thriving Victorian community. The remnants of heritage buildings and bridges can be seen today as well as still standing historical structures. Be sure to visit the botanical gardens of Malmsbury, some of the oldest gardens in Australia.
