Margaret River is probably most well known for its wineries - and rightly so. The Mediterranean climate of the Margaret River region produces some of the best wines in Australia. Leeuwin Estate, one of the larger wineries, has an incredible range of wines. Vasse Felix, the first winery in the region, is another good place to sample some of the region’s famous wines. You might like to stop for lunch at the environmentally sustainably managed Cullen Winery.

Closer to the coast, check out Mammoth cave for a real adventure for the whole family. Known for its amazing fossils and rock formations, its an easy drive from the town centre. Take a trip to Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin for their superb picturesque outlooks, walking tracks and lighthouses. Cape Leeuwin is Australia’s most south-western point and offers an impressive view of the swirling waters of the Indian and Southern Oceans meeting. If you take a walk down to the beach, be sure to pack some insect repellent as there can be a lot of flies.

Check out nearby Geographe Bay and take a swim at Busselton Beach or jump off the incredible pier that extends almost 1.3 miles (2 kms) into the ocean. Nearby Yallingup is another great place to take a dip or have a go at surfing on some of the most spectacular waves in Australia. A short trip south will also offer you a chance to climb the Gloucester tree, if you’re brave enough that is. At over 230 ft (73 m) high, it is the world’s tallest fire-lookout tree and you’ll be treated to some amazing 360° views of the surrounding karri forests.

The whole area is marvellously captured in the writing of renowned local author Tim Winton, with Cloudstreet being one of our personal favourites.
