The remarkable Ningaloo Reef is the west's answer to the Great Barrier Reef, although not as well known, it is the longest fringing reef in the world, and is both less developed and closer to shore than it's eastern counterpart. There are hundreds of colourful fish species and corals, and the protected lagoons formed between the shore and the reefs are full of fish and free of poison jellyfish and marine stingers!
One of the most famous visitors to Ningaloo are the magnificent whale sharks that swim magestically in the clear waters. Visitors can dive or snorkel alongside the gentle giants from March to June. Immediately after the whale shark season humpback whales frequent the area until October. So if it is giant marine life you like to see, then this is surely one of the best destinations in the world.

Of course Ningaloo is also home to some smaller creatures, rare loggerhead and green turtles lay their eggs on the beaches adjacent to the reef and dolphins, dugong and manta rays are ever present.
As if all that is not enough there are historic wrecks to dive, and fishing is also allowed over much of the area.
Snorkelling and diving tours to the outer parts of Ningaloo are available through local operators. Some of these operate special coral viewing boats which are a comfortable and popular way to see the reef.
