Port Fairy Information

Port Fairy is an historic fishing town situated on Vicoria’s south west coast between Portland and Warrnambool Most of the almost 50 historic buildings in the town, date from the days it was a port for sealers and whalers in the mid 1800’s. It is distinguished by rows of Norfolk Pines along the streets and along the Moyne River. There are many picturesque and interesting sites in the town including the Fisherman’s Wharf along the banks of the river which is still home to a substantial fishing fleet. Bluestone whalers cottages are dotted throughout the town. It is also home to Victoria’s oldest licensed pub - the Caledonian Inn from 1844.

Griffiths Island is linked to the mainland by a pedestrian cause way. There is a walking track around the island to the lighthouse at the eastern end and a mutton bird colony. There are also some well established botanical gardens, parks, many museums and fortifications at Battery Hill which date from a fear of Russian invasion in the 1860’s.
