Port Kembla was originally known as Red Point and was situated on land granted to David Allen in 1816, which he called Illawarra Farm. By 1883, a private jetty was built to ship coal from Mt Kembla mine to Sydney, in conjunction with a railway line. From then on the area became Port Kembla and other mining and commercial companies built private jetties and commercial buildings in the area. In 1898 an artificial harbour was proposed involving the building of two breakwaters to cope with increased traffic. Upon completion this small harbour attracted yet more industry including metal refining and steelworks, which again by 1960 required the building of a secondary harbour.

Today Port Kembla is home to Industry World, which works as a unique educational and tourism facility providing access to the various heavy and support industries located in the harbour area.
