Port Macquarie Information

The Australian coastline is absolutely brimming with amazing beach towns that thrive on their sun drenched shorelines. Port Macquarie is one such town that deserves a visit. One of the oldest settlements outside of Sydney, Port Macquarie is a 4.5 hour drive to the north of Sydney along National Highway 1. With its range of activities for all visitors, it is a great destination for an escape out of Sydney or for a stopover on an east coast adventure.

Port Macquarie is well known for its wildlife which is found in great numbers both in the sea and on land. Take a look at the world’s only Koala Hospital and get up close and personal with some of Australia’s iconic wildlife at the Billabong Wildlife Park. Whales are regularly seen in the ocean around Port Macquarie on their migration northwards and whale watching expeditions are available in the later part of the year. Dolphin cruises can also be found but its almost better to capture them from the shoreline, surfing the waves along one of the many beaches in the area.

Take a walk along the 5 mile (8kms) coastal walking track from Town Beach, south towards the lighthouse. You pass 8 beaches and all are great for having a dip in the clean blue water of the Pacific Ocean but do swim between the flags.  Beach fishing is great off the south of Tacking Point and back on Town Beach you can try your hand at surfing with some of the locals. Throughout the area there are also horse riding excursions through the spectacular Bellrowan Valley and if you’re really feeling daring have a go at paintball in the Australian bush.

Port Macquarie has an excellent blend of laid back but it also caters to the luxury traveller. The restaurants on Short St and Clarence St along the waterfront are excellent and have a good range of local and international cuisine. The Observatory Hotel and Apartments have some of the best views in Port Macquarie.
