The Katoomba Scenic Railway in the Blue Mountains is the steepest funicular railway in the world. It descends through sandstone cliffs for 415m at a gradient of 52 degrees, through a tunnel and down into a lush rainforested valley. The Scenic Railway was originally part of a network of tramways in the region designed to bring shale and later coal up to the main railway. As the mining industry declined, management spotted the potential for the tourist trade after bringing up to the top of the cliff a group of exhausted bushwalkers in 1929. By 1933 the y had built a passenger car. Mining stopped after world war 2 but the cableway continued, eventually becoming the only funicular railway to survive in the Blue Mountains.

Today it is an extremely popular tourist attraction carrying up to 84 people. At the bottom of the valley it is a 10 minute walk to the Katoomba Falls and there is also an historic coal mining display and a boardwalk through the rainforest.
