The Sydney Harbour Bridge is an iconic image of Australia, up there with the Opera House and Uluru it is instantly recognisable to any Aussie, and a great many citizens of the world.
At just over a kilometre long and with an arch that spans half that length it is one of the largest steel bridges of it's design anywhere in the world. The bridge has 8 lanes to carry vehicle traffic and a further two for rail as well as a cycle lane and pedestrian walkway.

Completed in 1932 to much fanfare, the bridge was ten years in construction and at the time represented a major triumph of engineering and manpower. Massive amounts of steel and granite were moved during the construction phase, which saw the bridge built out from both sides of the harbour at once eventually meeting in the middle precisely.
The bridge still carries many thousands of cars a day, although these days it is augmented by a tunnel below the harbour.
One of the best and most popular activities is a climb to the peak of the arches where visitors are thrilled by the magnificent views of the city and harbour spread out below.
