Watsons Bay is Australia’s most famous fishing village and is home to many of Sydney’s historical, gastronomic and scenic attractions. It is situated on South Head and is best reached by ferry from Circular Quay. Hundreds of visitors and locals visit daily to eat seafood at Doyles on the Beach and the Watsons Bay Hotel. The walk from the village to South Head takes in Camp Cove where Arthur Philip first came ashore with the first fleet in 1788. Other historic attractions include the Macquarie Lighthouse, a copy of the original built in 1818 and designed by convict Francis Greenway.

Apart from spectacular views to the east and west, the Gap is the site of the worst maritime disaster in Australia, with the sinking of the Dunbar in 1857 and the death of all but one of the 122 people on board. Other highlights of the Watsons Bay area are Vaucluse House, the oldest museum in Australia, and the HMAS Watson naval chapel. All this combined with the beautiful secluded beaches and coastal cliffs of the Sydney Harbour National Park make Watsons Bay a must for any visitor to Sydney.
