It is among the best sailing destinations in the world, hundreds of miles of calm warm waters blessed with breezes to carry mariners around dozens of quiet anchorages. The waters are alive with tropical fish species, corals and are warm, even in winter. Airlie Beach is the mainland base from where yachts can be hired and also hosts dozens of tour companies which can take you out on the water and to all the best spots.  Whitehaven Beach is one of the areas prime attractions, miles of perfectly white sand fronted by blue water. Many of the islands are largely untouched and are criss-crossed by walking trails and fringed with beaches for land based fun.

Most of the islands are national parks, preserving the areas beauty for future generations, however there are a handful of superb resorts on eight of the islands to suit most tastes and budgets.

The resorts offer and opportunity to stay in comfort in this fantastic regions and enjoy numerous activities, restaurants, bars and pools. Day spas, jet skis and small sailing vessels are all available to enjoy, and several of the islands have excellent golf courses with some of the best views of any golf courses in existence. Hamilton Island is probably the best known of the resorts, but there are others at Hayman Island, South Molle Island, Lizard Island and others.

The Whitsundays are a place unique in the world and should be high on everyone 'must do' list.
