Wombeyan Caves Information

Imagine a place so ancient, that it was old before the first dinosaur walked the earth. Over millions of years a maze of underground passages, streams and caverns has developed. Known to the Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years, they were re-discovereed by Europeans in 1828 when explorers stumbled across a vast opening into the amazing depths below.

Wombeyan Caves feature vast caverns adorned with striking and delicate formations in a range of sizes, shapes and textures. These limestone caves are both remarkable and beautiful.

Your experienced, trained guide will lead you through ancient chambers, lit to highlight the features of richly coloured formations, while explaining the natural processes that formed these wonders.

A variety of guided tours between one and one and a half hours in duration are available every day. 'Wombeyan Passes' are an exciting and value packed way of seeing two or more of Wombeyan's breathtaking caves.

If you prefer a tour at your own pace....Take a leisurely stroll through Fig Tree Cave, with its automated lights and commentary, which will allow you to spend the time you need to appreciate the awe-inspiring features.

The caves are the pride of Wombeyan, yet even without them the 417 hectare reserve provides a diversity of rewarding experiences. Three spectacular bush walks lead you to mountain lookouts, secluded waterfalls and a dramatically beautiful limestone gorge, that is excellent for swimming in summer.

Relaxing is easy with picnic grounds and electric BBQs provided for cooking. There is lots of space for play, a rustic cricket pitch and tennis courts to keep your family or group amused and exercised.

Why not stay a while and discover all of Wombeyan. Wombeyan offers a range of accommodation styles, from a self-contained cottage to ensuite cabins located in quiet corner. For larger groups, the Tanderra dormatory is the ideal situation.

There is a well stocked kiosk, so whether you are dropping by or staying, you will be looked after.
