Picture in your head that perfect beach. You know the one, where the sand is brilliant white, and warm, but not too warm; where the beach slopes gently into water so soft and balmy it feels like you're enveloped in a blanket; where palm trees reach across the sand from a tropical jungle that borders the beach, and the loudest noise is the soughing of a gentle breeze through palm fronds, or the distant call of a seabird; and where the colours of the water explore every hue of green and blue as they gradually deepen into the breathless sea. Welcome to Aitutaki!

About 220 km and less than an hours flight from Rarotonga the exquisitely beautiful island of Aitutaki is a 20 square km (8 square mile) speck in the calm waters of the South Pacific. It's most striking feature is the brilliantly coloured lagoon in the middle of the island that is surrounded by fifteen tiny and largely uninhabited islets. Aitutaki is one of the most popular of the Cook Islands but has largely avoided mass tourism. There are tours available to explore the lagoon or around the island, and taking a cruise out to any of the small islets with their perfect beaches is a wonderful experience. Tapuaetai, or 'One Foot Island' is probably most notable for it's fantastic views of the lagoon.
Scuba diving and snorkelling are popular and there are a number of dive shops on the island where you can hire gear and they can arrange for a dive boat. If you want to try your hand at fishing there are plenty of fish in the lagoon or you can try some deep sea fishing off the coast. Water sports are also well catered for with windsurfers, kite boards and sea kayaks all available for hire. Exploring the island is also easy as scooters, bikes and hire cars are available for rent. It's worth getting out onto some of the back roads and see where they take you - you'll probably end up on another gorgeous beach!
For such a small island there's a relatively good choice of accommodation with mostly hotels from a mid-range budget to expensive for the top end resorts. There are a few budget hotels catering to backpacker style accommodation.
Aitutaki is genuinely one of the most beautiful tropical destinations you're ever likely to see and a trip here will redefine your idea of paradise.
