Mauke is a typical tropical island emblazoned with rich jungle surrounded by spectacular coral reefs. It is 32 kiometres in circumference, about half the size of Raratonga. The centre of islands is made up of a 30 meter volcanic plateau that is surrounded by 'Makatea', a raised coral and limestone formation that runs around the circumference of the island. Mauke is a short 40 minute flight to the north east of Raratonga.
The island has a colourful history with the original inhabitants being quite warlike at times, indulging in cannabilism and the taking of the odd slave or two. When Christianity arrived on the island the locals embraced a more peaceful outlook on life which has carried forward to todays villagers who greet visitors to the island as though they were long lost family.

The population of Mauke largely lives in three villages along the western coastline, Kimiangatau, Areora and Ngatiarua. Accommodation is limited to around 40 visitors at a time to endure that the islands preserves its unique local atmosphere and way of life.
Visitors can enjoy taking walks along paths through the lush vegetation of the interior or exploring any of the spectacular fresh water caves of which 'Motuanga Cave' is the best known. There are several secluded and idyllic beaches that open up onto the warm clear waters of the surrounding lagoon. These are perfect for swimming though the locals seem to prefer taking a swim in the harbour.
For the more adventurous, motorcycle hire is available and visitors can easily travel around the crushed coral roads and circumnavigate the island. This is a terrific way to really get out amongst the country side and take in the intoxicating feeling of being on a remote tropical paradise in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
