The Southern Group of the Cook Islands is a large collection of Islands and atolls, including Raratonga, where 90 percent of the population live. The Southern Group has nine principal islands which are popular with tourists and are spread over thousands of kilometers.
The nations capital, Raratonga, is the most well know of all of the islands and is also the most populated. It hosts the international airport and is the central embarkation point to all other Cook Islands. Raratonga is distinctive for its soaring mountainous interior and ring of spectacular white sandy beaches and coral coves that encircle it.

Aitutaki is another popular holiday destination and is famous for its large lagoon, pristine beaches and great diving. It has been used as a location for many TV series and movies and was described as one of the top one hundred destinations that you must see in the world.
Some of the more remote islands include Manaue, Takutea and Palmerston. These are all amazing destinations but due to their remoteness they take a little more planning and effort to get to. That said, with a little effort travelers can find themselves 'a million miles' away from the hectic life of the west, living happily in an almost deserted tropical island paradise.
