As long as there is a northern coast you could find the name 'North Shore' in just about every country on the planet, but what comes to most people's mind when hearing the term is massive glassy cylinders of water exploding into mountains of foam and white water and the occasional tiny speck of a brave, or crazy, surfer challenging the waves.

Hawaii's North Shore is on the island of Oahu on the, you guessed it, northern shore. The best surfers from all around the world are drawn to this, the Holy Grail of surfing. Some of the most famous surfing spots in the world are found along the 11 km (7 mile) stretch of coastline such as Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline on Ehukai Beach and the incredible Waimea Bay. Winter is the season to see the biggest waves which can tower more than 9 metres (30 feet) high before they come crashing down like a freight train through a room full of mirrors. Unless you are an experienced big wave surfer you'd best watch from shore.
However it's not always like swimming in a washing machine. In the summer months the waters are much calmer and the waves are perfect for swimming and the beaches are perfect for sunbathing. The North Shore also has some fine hotels and resorts as well as great shopping and dining options.
If you've always wanted to live in a Beach Boys song or just visit one of the world's most famous surfing areas Oahu's North Shore will let you do both things and so much more.
