The Bay of Islands is located in the far north of New Zealand's North Island and not surprisingly is in the Northlands region. The region is well heeled for tourists and there are well established accommodation options catering to beer budgets or champagne tastes. The town of Paihia is the ideal base having a great range of paces to stay but also dining and entertainment choices to keep everyone happy. From here it's easy to get to all parts of the Bay of Plenty with many of the cruises and charter boats based here. The historic town of Russell is not far from Paihia and you'll find some pretty beaches to stroll along as well as many quaint shops and cafes.

The Bay of Plenty is an ideal location to enjoy water based activities with sailing, snorkelling and scuba diving being popular with visitors. The area is also well known for deep sea fishing and charter boats take keen fishermen out to test their skill for day trips or up to a week or more.

After speeding jetboats and bungee-jumping the Bay of Islands is what most people picture in their head when they think of New Zealand without realising it. When you see it for yourself you'll have that 'Ah, so THIS is where I saw that' moment, and it will just keep getting better.
