Christchurch is the second largest of New Zealand's cities by population, behind Auckland the largest and just ahead of Wellington, the capital. The city is located on the west coast about half way down the South Island and is home to around 400,000 people. The surrounding region, Canterbury, is vast covering around 45,000 square kilometres but most of the population is centred in Christchurch.
In February 2011 the city of Christchurch was tragically struck by a deadly earthquake with many of the buildings in the CBD severely damaged or destroyed. The city is recovering and rebuilding and the areas outside the CBD as well as the Christchurch Airport are all operating as per usual. The other good news is that virtually all areas outside of city were completely undamaged by the quake so now is a great time to visit Christchurch Canterbury to get great deals and to support the local economy.
The natural beauty of the area has always been a major drawcard and now is no different. Visit beautiful Hanmer Springs and experience pure relaxation in the natural thermal pools; take a whale watching cruise to view the majestic sperm whales that live off shore all year round, or swim with wild, yet friendly and curious dolphins in Akaroa. The Tasman Glacier is a dynamic attraction that changes constantly and is definitely worth a visit, and the Mount Hutt ski area has world class amenities and always great snow. The incredible Mount Cook is the highest point in New Zealand at 3,754m (12,300 feet) and is known in the Maori language as Aoraki , or 'piercing the clouds' - and it's easy to see why.
It's not only the stunning scenery that's so wonderful in Christchurch Canterbury but you'll find the people are friendly and truly welcoming, so come and experience natures wonder and be enchanted by the people who live in this paradise every day.
