Due to the disparity in latitude between the northernmost and southernmost parts of the country, New Zealand's climate varies greatly from subtropical in the North to temperate in the South. Overall the weather is highly changeable and subject to substantial regional variation, it pays to be prepared for changes in the weather when heading out for an extended period.
The summer occurs in the months of December to February where the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30ºC and in the winter months of June, July and August between 10-15ºC. In general the south island experiences the lower temperatures in this range.
The varied climate means that parts of the North Island are known for warm, sunny beaches, while there are major ski resorts on both islands in the alpine areas.
