Dunedin Information

Dunedin is the heart of New Zealand’s Otago Region, on the south-east coast of the South Island, about 350 kilometres south of Christchurch. The city is nestled within a natural harbour surrounded by steep picturesque hills, the remains of an extinct volcano. This beautiful city offers a pleasant mixture of buzzing student night life, historical significance and sophisticated modern living – a definite ‘must-do’ when visiting the South Island of New Zealand.

Within the town, there are beautiful Victorian buildings, cathedrals and numerous museums that pay homage to Dunedin’s Scottish heritage.  Dunedin Railway Station, Larnach Castle and First Church are worth a visit and if you’ve half a day to spare, you may think about an inner city walking tour, which are run seven days a week and come highly recommended.

Biking is a great way to explore this relatively flat city. There are also beautiful rides along the Otago Peninsula where you can see some of New Zealand’s most exquisite wildlife including the endangered yellow-eyed penguin and the majestic New Zealand sea lion. There are a number of beaches for swimming, surfing and kite-surfing the most popular being St Clair Beach - though a wet suit is definitely advisable as the water is cold this far down south.

For those looking for a more physical challenge, be sure to set aside a few hours to attempt the hike up Baldwin Street dubbed the “world’s steepest street”, from which there is a gorgeous view of the entire city and its surroundings.

Home to New Zealand’s oldest University, The University of Otago, Dunedin has a thriving student population and as a result the nightlife here is up there with the best on offer in the South Island. A selection of restaurants, trendy bars and dance clubs are all concentrated around the main ‘Octagon’ in the centre of town.

Dunedin is approximately five hours south of Christchurch. The drive down is varied and beautiful. Alternatively, you can fly here from Auckland, Wellington or Australia.
