Hawke’s Bay is also known for its glorious beaches, stretching from Mahia Peninsula in the north to Porangahau in the south. Five wide rivers run swiftly from the forested Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges to the Pacific Ocean and offer some excellent hiking, kayaking, fishing, swimming and rafting. The average summer temperature is around 24 degrees celcius, although it regularly gets up to 30+ degrees in the height of summer. The average in winter is around 13 degrees with many crisp and clear sunny days.

While you can fly into Hawke’s Bay from Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch the scenic nature of the road trip into the region is only 90 minute drive from Lake Taupo or 4 hours from Wellington Popular routes to follow are the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail, Pacific Coast Highway and the Thermal Explorer Highway.
