Like most of the area, the lake is heavily influenced by the geo-thermal acitivity which continues beneath its surface. The waters have a high sulphur content and contribute to the stunning blue and green colouration that can be seen in the right light. In the centre of the lake Mokoia Island is the subject of a famous Maori legend. This Maori love story can be heard on a guided tour of the island.
You can cruise the lake on a paddle steamer cruises or take a jet boat ride and the shoreline hosts a range of unique attractions including world renowned luxury spas where visitors can enjoy sumptuous treatments and hot baths set in peaceful bushland, while overlooking the lake.
