Voted world's top travel destination in the 2008 Travelers' Choice Destinations Awards by TripAdvisor, Milford Sound is truly a spectacular natural wonder. It is widely regarded as New Zealand's number one tourist destination and is visited by close to a million people each year.

The sound is actually a fjord running some 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea. Sheer rock faces rise up from the crystal clear water to a height of up to 1200 metres. Two permanent waterfalls send fresh water cascading into the sound, joined by thousands of temporary waterfalls during and immediately after heavy rain, something that happens quite often with the area having an annual rainfall of 6,813mm. Lush rain forest clings to the peaks around the fjord and its waters are home to seals, dolphins, penguins and occasionally, whales.
Very few people live at Milford Sound and there is little permanent tourist accommodation, so most visits are for the day only, although you can stay overnight on a cruise boat making the journey from Ivercargill. For day visitors, you can drive from Invercargill or Queenstown in about 4 hours. For those unused to driving on ice and snow a bus trip may be a better option. Trekking and kayaking are also options for seeing the area up close and a tourist flight will give you a brief but utterly spectacular view.
